Stunning vintage seaside wedding in Suffolk
Today's wedding is truly magical and I am thrilled to feature it. Kate and Piers’ stunning coastal wedding was photographed by London and Suffolk based wedding photographer Anna McCarthy back in February this year, on an incredibly crisp sunny day. It makes me smile just to look at the picture-perfect beach, the old-worldly prom, the icecream-coloured beach huts, the fabulous vintage gear, the huge smiles on Kate and Piers' faces, and of course the gorgeous doggie! Kate tells the story much better than I can so please scroll down to read her lovely words and in particular her beautiful tribute to her late mother who tragically passed away just before the wedding. The happy couple were married in a military church service at one of England’s most well known and beautiful churches – Holy Trinity Blythburgh, which sits atop the unspoilt Blythe estuary and marshes before the river flows out to the sea. The bride wore an ivory velvet dress, embellished around the neckline with delicate ostrich feathers discovered at a London bridal sale and a complete bargain at under £500! Clothing by Jinnie in Bramfield, an accomplished dressmaker, added netting underskirts to the bias cut velvet dress, a champagne silk stiffened sash to create a big bow at the back of the dress, and a handmade and tailored ivory silk jacket in keeping with the numerous 1920s touches to the wedding. A very sparkly hairpiece by Glitzy Secrets provided striking adornment to the bride’s hair, coupled by a smaller side clip with blue stoned flowers (as her ‘something blue’). Kate’s Swarovski crystal studded veil was her ‘something borrowed’ and her antique 1920s cushion cut diamond engagement ring from Michael Rose in the Burlington Arcade, London, was not only her ‘something old’ but also inspired the era for the wedding. Her groom was in his full military regalia as an Officer in the British Army and accompanied by a military Guard of Honour.Her bridesmaids and flower girl, each in individual silver and purple dresses from highstreet stores, L K Bennett and Monsoon, were identically accessorized including designer jewellery by Poppy Rocks; vintage 1920s ivory kid gloves sourced from Alfie’s antique market in London; feather shoulder stoles by Coast; and art deco style sparkly peep toe shoes. Their silver-screen siren hair styles were created by Moutters hair design in Halesworth. Hand held bouquets of ivory roses, cream anemones, purple ranuculus and freesias were carried by each bridesmaid, whilst the bride’s bouquet contained a mix of flowers recommended by her beloved Mother, who sadly lost her dignified battle with Cancer the month prior to the wedding:

Their church service was followed by a quintessentially high tea with vintage antique china provided by Jardin de Sophie with pink Adnams fizz and sandwiches, scones and miniature lemon sponges at the elegant Swan Hotel in Southwold. Whilst their guests had tea, the bride and groom enjoyed 15 minutes with their beloved dog Wilson on the beach, relaxing by the sea in some aptly named beach huts and sharing a kiss in front of iconic Southwold pier!
On their return to the tea party, Kate and Piers cut what must have been the smallest wedding cake ever with the world’s largest sword!
Guests then boarded vintage buses to join them at Elms Barn(www.elmsbarnsweddings.co.uk), just inside the county of Norfolk, near Beccles for their wedding reception - with the vintage style of a Jane Austen period drama and a stunning 17th Century barn to provide a warm and stylish indoor venue. Guest favours were Chinese fortune sticks by Cox and Cox hidden in napkins, tied with ‘to have and to hold’ ribbon, also by Cox and Cox. A donation to Cancer Research was also made, as part of the wedding favours, in memory of Kate’s mother. After a delicious wedding breakfast, and the cutting of a cake of many of scrumptious cheeses, guests released night sky lanterns into a starry sky and watched them drift across the fully moonlit East Anglian landscape before heading back inside to dance the night away in celebration.
Incidentally, the blurry images of the bride and bridesmaids are a clever twist by Anna. She shot their reflection in the water from the other side of the lake while they were just sorting out the bouquets and chatting and completely oblivious to what she was doing. Anna then gave the image careful tweaking in Photoshop (every image that makes her edit gets special attention before being printed) and flipped it to create this lovely atmospheric moment caught in an unusual way.
Kate and Piers are thrilled with Anna’s work at their wedding which captured so many special moments throughout their day. Kate said, “You don’t realise when you organise every detail that, amongst all the joy and emotion, your day is going to fly by at such speed. Anna’s photographs meant all that attention to detail was not lost and both Piers and I love to revisit our wedding day, thanks to Anna’s completely captivating images.”
